The Snowball Effect

Nothing but love for this episode, I promise.

ONE

Bubble-wipe to a real life iceberg scene. Over wintery landscapes, the French narrator speaks of the mighty iceberg that can sometimes stray into warmer waters.

TWO

Cut to the three-palm island as an iceberg floats in. Now we look at Bikini Bottom, that cozy community, as snow begins to fall.

THREE

Continued scenes of snow-covered undersea buildings as the weather fish, wearing a trapper hat, reports on the winter blanket covering Jellyfish Fields and the neighborhoods.

FOUR

We see a snowy pineapple house as Spongebob opens his door and cheers. He pops on a Santa hat; Gary has two, one for each eye stalk. Fish make snow sculptures. Plankton, while plotting evil, becomes buried in falling snowflakes.

Bubble-wipe to a happy Patrick making a snow angel. (It comes out as a circle, lol.) Spongebob pelts him with a snowball. It takes a beat for Patrick to understand what a snowball fight is, but then he’s excited. He forms a cube, a pyramid, and a DNA helix, failing at the ball. When Spongebob makes one for him, he thanks him and hits him with it. They face off and start the war. In the background is the Easter Island head.

Squidward in cozy slippers and with a cup of tea sits before his fireplace. Looking out the window he sees Patrick building a fort on one side of his yard and Spongebob on the other. Construction noises, including saws (lol), sound over. Out the window he yells at them to be quiet. They invite him to join the war. After he refuses, snort-laughing, a snowball flies through the window and douses his fire.

The battle continues. Taking a hit, Spongebob retaliates by sticking a funnel loaded with snow into his head. Many shots of snow pelting Patrick follow. And follow, lol. Eventually Patrick, stuffed with snowballs, knocks on Squidward’s door for help. “Aiding the enemy,” Spongebob calls out. He throws a snowball through the door, dousing the fire. In anger, Squid makes a snowball. He’s on my side, Patrick cheers. Nope, he’s on nobody’s side. Inside he goes, leaving such childishness behind.

SWITCH

Outside, Spongebob and Patrick happily announce that they’ll knock each other’s brains out. A thought bubble of Spongebob’s brain falling out appears over Squidward’s head.

FIVE

Sniggering, he pushes a chair up to the window. Instead, though, he sees them shaking hands and smiling. Immediately, he’s out the door to chastise them. He rips up their peace treaty. The discussion goes round and round as he tries to convince them to fight with each other.

Still arguing theoretically, Squidward ends up building a fort. It’s just a small snowpile, though, and they tell him it’s not right. Hitting him with a snowball, they say, “See? It’s too small.” Haha, he keeps trying to make some point and Patrick keeps pegging him in the face. He finally throws one back, only it misses and douses his fire. (Haha! Lol.)

“Squidward returned fire!” The screen turns white with snowballs. When it clears, Squidward is a snowman. That’s it! He throws one back, hitting Spongebob, and starts to giggle. That was actually kind of fun! His arms windmill and he goes crazy.

SIX

Even his clarinet gets tossed.

SEVEN

Spongebob and Patrick walk away. Squidward’s too busy to notice.

EIGHT

Running out of steam, Squidward stops. Looking around, he notices his pitiful fort. Considering all attack angles, he builds like a maniac. Dissolve to later, when his fort tube is taller than his house. He comes under fire, snow plopping on his head, and he throws snowballs wildly. Pull out, and we see he’s under a coral tree that’s melting on him. He keeps throwing, having a blast.

NINE

Inside the pineapple house, Spongebob and Patrick sit under blankets, sipping cocoa, watching TV, and eating popcorn.

CRITICAL NOTES

I guess you could say that the Three and Six are incongruous items: a human hat on a fish and a clarinet in a snowball fight. I don’t feel like being too picky about it. It works. I just love the logic of this episode. A rogue iceberg causes snow in a tropical undersea realm. There’s something so Christmas-y about it.
