Happy St. Patrick’s Day! This is a store-bought cut flower that I quickly pressed for the holiday. The iron scorched the petals (oops), so I cheated the green a little with paint.
This is another example of a repurposed background. I felt the original piece didn’t quite hit the mark I wanted, and so it gets a second life.
I was never quite satisfied with the track art for the song “Burning” on Heart of Iron. Uploaded to bandcamp is this new encaustic piece, based on Robert Salmon’s 1828 painting Ship in Storm.
The original post introducing the first attempt at “Burning” track art is here. You can see why I was dissatisfied. Visually and thematically murky!
Burning I
However, the funny part is this:
Burning II
If you look closely you’ll see that the poinsettia piece is actually the original “Burning” art slightly smoothed and fused, and then repurposed as a background. Although I work on wallboard, which is inexpensive, the layers of wax and the build-up of color over days of painting are precious. It’s nice to get a second life out of something that became disappointing.
Tell me what you think of my editing! Hahaha! These videos are satisfying to make, much to my surprise, so I thought I’d try to get better at it. If you watch (or skip) to the end you’ll see a visitor to my studio.
And if you can’t understand my garble, the Heart of Iron piece is a mix of bougainvillea flowers and eucalyptus leaves.
Here is the link to the original post about this piece.
Last week I published a new album at bandcamp, Ardent. More songs are coming (the second is in final recording), but for now here is the art for the first track.
I’ve dropped a new album (so far with only one track). Based on Pride and Prejudice, the concept is for each track to be a moment from the novel. The next track is being recorded now!
The new piece, a work-in-progress, has flowers pressed with an iron before they were waxed. The older piece, finished about 7 mos. ago, is starting to brown.
