The Series Finale

Check the Critical Notes after the breakdown for my thoughts on the structure of the entire series. I figure out why I felt so dissatisfied when the season ended.

ONE

We pick up where the last episode left off. Wanda’s twins are bound by Agatha’s magic purple rope. The witches fight, and Agatha holds Wanda’s red power beams. “I take power from the undeserving,” she says. Wanda’s hand withers and turns black from the drain. Just when Agatha appears to be winning, Wanda hits her with a car that crashes through a house window. Looking through the broken glass, Wanda sees two empty boots under the car in a Wizard of Oz homage. (I laughed.)

TWO

Behind Wanda, White Vision floats down. He touches her cheek in what appears to be a tender moment, then squeezes her head in a vise grip. Our Vision rams him away. Wanda says to him, “I should’ve told you everything.” They’re a team, though. “This is our home. Let’s fight for it.” The Visions fly off in one direction, and the witches go the other.

THREE

Meanwhile, Pietro has Monica trapped inside his house, using his superspeed to corral her.

Previously On

LEFTOVER NINE

We start with “Previously on Wandavision”, but this isn’t a normal recap of last week’s episode. (I don’t think. You never know when you’re being trolled on this show, lol.) A news report lays out “Devastation in Sokovia”, and then gives us background on the Maximoff twins, including footage from Marvel movies. Hayward speaks during the report, detailing that Wanda stole Vision’s body, and we see Darcy tell Vision that Wanda killed him. That we know from last week, but now we have actual movie footage that shows the event. Thanos pulls the infinity stone from Vision’s head. 

ONE

The recap ends with Agatha’s introduction of herself in the basement, also seen last week.

TWO

Cut to torches and a title screen: Salem, Massachusetts, 1693.

Agatha is dragged through the woods by women in cloaks. Forming a circle, they place Agatha on a scaffold in the center and restrain her with magical bonds. An older angry woman asks Agatha if she’s a witch. Yes, she says. You’ve betrayed your coven, says Angry. You stole knowledge and practiced dark magic. At first Agatha looks cowed, but it’s an act. “Help me, mother,” she calls to Angry. She turns the power of the bonds back on the witches’ circle and drains their life away. Angry blasts her with a super beam, but Agatha drains her, too. Reaching down to her mother’s skeleton, Agatha unpins a brooch from the bodice and floats up and away.

THREE

(There is no Three.)

Breaking the Fourth Wall

On my first watch, this is the episode that started lowering my opinion of Wandavision. Watching it again, I dislike it even more. Let’s see if its structure is partly responsible.

(Again, I don’t recognize the homage of this episode. I’m just not up-to-date on certain eras of television programs!)

ONE

Light music as Wanda sleeps in bed. She reaches over to Vision’s empty side. Now she talks to the camera while sitting in a chair and wearing a robe. It’s like an interview and/or like therapy. She’s in bed again (still) when the boys come to her and say their game is freaking out. We see them using controllers, which change to joysticks, and then to a deck of cards. Completely under the covers, Wanda says she’s resting her eyes. Back to her interview, she decides to have a day to herself.

When she pushes back the bedcovers, she reveals her Halloween costume. Noticing she’s still in yesterday’s clothes, she cringes. In the kitchen, now in her robe, she takes an almond milk from the fridge and Sugar Snaps from the cupboard. The milk changes to a carton of whole, and then to a glass bottle of milk. Eating her cereal, she stares at it.

Interviewing, Wanda says she’s not sure why things keep changing. Credits for this show begin, with “Wanda” written on everything. The music is boppy and upbeat. It ends with all the “Wanda” titles finally joined by a “Vision”.

An overlay identifies “SWORD temporary retreat eight miles outside Westview.” Director Hayward and another officer speak. The broadcast signal is gone, they say. We don’t know SWORD’s plans, but whatever it is launches today. Behind them is a very large Hex wall.

TWO

Cut to Vision, still in costume, lying on the grass. This is the last place we saw him. Waking, he is surrounded by the circus. “You the new clown?” the strong man asks. Chained to the front of a truck is Darcy. You don’t remember me from last night, Vision asks her. She breaks free (fake chains) and walks away from him, thinking him a creep trying to hit on her.

Wanda asks the kids, “Have you seen your dad?” One of the twins mentions Pietro’s comment about rekilling Vision. He’s not your uncle, replies Wanda. Throughout is a sarcastic tone with clever patter. (It’s obnoxious, actually.) I have no answers, Wanda shrugs. She settles herself on the couch and takes the remote from the boys.

THREE

In comes Agnes, who quickly assesses the mood and offers to take the boys. Wanda is very grateful. “Let’s go, I won’t bite,” Agnes says.

All-New Halloween Spooktacular

Action-packed and full of reveals. I’m happy that the overall story moves forward with strength and purpose. 

But I don’t care if the costumes are canon, lol. They’re hideous.

ONE

Immediately the show opens with the fake credit sequence. One of the boys is running a video camcorder. Fast edits, sped up footage. 

The boy (Billy?) talks directly to the camera, bringing us up to date. He’s dressed in a costume. The brother (Tommy?) is obviously the cool one. Teasing and jokes go by, but no laugh track now.

Pietro naps on the couch, then wakes and speeds about. He’s a creepy uncle. Wanda comes downstairs in a Halloween costume that references her first comic superhero outfit (I think). Billy gives meta-commentary: “Mom’s been weird.”

TWO

Now Vision in his own superhero costume comes downstairs.. He’s on his way to help with the neighborhood watch. Wanda says, You didn’t tell me. The tension between them is uncomfortable.

THREE

Billy speaks to the camera: Mom and Dad are . . . different.

On a Very Special Episode . . .

Solid structure, combined with an overwhelming amount of character development. Mostly, I feel regret and a sense of lost opportunity. Critical Notes at the end.

ONE

A ranch-style house. Inside, Wanda holds one of the crying babies, begging it to go to sleep. Vision jiggles the other twin. I’m not sure what sitcom era we’re in, but he wears jeans and she has big Pebbles hair. A magic gesture won’t stop the crying, and neither will binkies. The laugh track, mysteriously, finds all this funny.

TWO

Here’s Agnes, wearing atrocious ‘80’s workout gear. Auntie Agnes, she calls herself, ready to help with the babies. Vision, for some reason, worries she’s not clean enough (?) to care for the twins. Smiling, Agnes looks at Wanda and says, “Shall we take that again?” When Wanda and Vision share a confused look, Agnes reiterates: Shall we take it from the top? Now Wanda gets it, and nervously laughs. Vision, though, doesn’t understand. What was that about, he asks. Did you really not see what I saw, he wonders. Wanda deflects: she’s just being neighborly. (Meanwhile, Agnes is chugging alcohol in the kitchen while exercising, lol.)

THREE

The room goes suddenly quiet. The babies fell asleep? No, they’re gone. Turn to the staircase and there they are, now five years old. Agnes knocks back a slug and shakes her head: Kids, amirite? Wanda and Vision give the boys hugs and say hello to their new children.

We Interrupt This Program

I actually gush after the breakdown. A rare moment, lol.

LEFTOVER 9

Echoing voices and a pixelated mist that resolves into Geraldine, bedside in a hospital room. She’s reforming, and others all about do the same. It’s chaos. Now we realize this is the moment after the blip when everyone comes back.

We really get a sense of the confusion and terror of all these people returning to the place they left off, while around them are the people who didn’t disappear, the ones who’ve had lives for the past five years.

Someone recognizes Geraldine and names her as Monica. For her it’s been twenty minutes, the moment she started napping in the hospital chair. The doctor who knows her, who hears her asking for her mother, says, “She died, honey.” Her cancer came back and she passed away three years ago, two years after you disappeared.

Cut to credits.

Now in Color

As always, Critical Notes are after the breakdown.

ONE

Oh, the sitcom homage is going to be The Brady Bunch this time. The title card has that groovy font, and the living room is all brick and wood. Wanda is pregnant and Vision is styled like Peter Fonda. It’s pretty funny. Geraldine has a large afro and Agnes has Marsha hair.

TWO/THREE

Exterior of the house, looking very ‘70s ranch style, and then inside as the doctor listens to Wanda’s belly. Laugh track at the birds-n-bees jokes. However, Vision is seriously trying to ask about the suddenness of this pregnancy. As he walks the doctor out the door, he asks if the doctor can keep the whole pregnancy quiet for now. And the doctor is headed away for vacation.

Don’t Touch That Dial

I’m afraid I’m a little harsh at the end of this Enneagram breakdown, lol. Look out.

ONE

Nighttime, with separate twin beds. 

TWO

Vision wears an eye mask and Wanda startles awake when a bump is heard. Laugh track. The bedside lamp flicks on and off as Wanda worries. Vision wakes.

Are you using your power to turn on the lights, dear, he asks. Yes. He rises, turns on the light manually, and looks out the window. Nothing. Are you using your night vision, Vision? A bump startles him and he dives into bed. Another bump and Wanda scoots the beds together.

On each side their slippers, which had been tucked under the edge of their beds, are left behind. Cute detail.

For some reason Vision is afraid to investigate the noise. Wanda, determined, slides the curtain wide open, showing a stormy tree branch outside. They relax. Also, Wanda flicks a finger and changes the side-by-side twins into a king-sized bed. As retro commentary it’s a bit obvious, but okay. They eye each other — wink — and duck under the covers.

THREE

From a cartoon moon come an animated Wanda and Vision, flying. Credit sequence, obviously, and a clear reference to Bewitched. It’s a shame the last episode used too many motifs from that show to make a clear distinction, but here we are. (How do you reference The Honeymooners or I Love Lucy, shows without a magical character like Wanda, and hit the same vibe?) It’s an adorable sequence, with cartoon Vision twinkling through walls and Wanda magically grocery shopping. Vision’s inability to eat or drink is referenced, and as Vision drives home through the cartoon neighborhood all the people are in their yards bopping and singing along, sort of smiling and sort of robotic.

Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience

As a child I loved Bewitched, so I was initially charmed by this first episode of WandaVision. On a second viewing, though, it becomes old very quickly. Nostalgia is only good for a brief moment, apparently. Structurally, you’ll see the episode is fairly sound. It’s just not funny, and the unsettling creepiness is too low key. Full notes are at the end of the Enneagram breakdown.

ONE

The screen clicks on, like a tube tv would, to show a black and white scene. A classic car, with a Just Married sign on the bumper, drives down a road. Inside, still in wedding gear, are a smiling Wanda and Vision. Sitcom music plays as they pass through a neighborhood. The mailman waves and Wanda, smiling, waves back while Vision pulls down his hat brim. Anyone who’s seen a sitcom has seen these dynamics: friendly wife, grumpy husband.

Wanda gestures at the For Sale sign in the yard, and it magically has a Sold banner across it. Vision, with his bald, metallic head, carries her, bride style, toward the threshold. With animated twinkle stars, he goes through the closed door and she drops to the welcome mat, shaking her head in mock confusion. He opens the door and carries her in proper while credits roll: “Starring Wanda Maximoff”. We get the picture. It’s winsome and retro, and also a little puzzling.

In the kitchen Wanda, wearing apron and pearls, magically levitates the dishes as she organizes the room. It’s done with CGI, I’m sure, but they’ve animated the dishes to look like they’re on wires, the way the old shows would’ve done it. Fun. Vision comes in, reading the newspaper, and they go through the sitcom schtick — insult, smile, give an “Oh, you!” with a dismissive gesture. With laugh track!

TWO

Vision asks if today is special. The calendar has a heart on this date, but neither of them remembers why. And they won’t admit they’ve forgotten. Just before Vision leaves for work he changes his face to a normal human presentation. So that explains that.

THREE

A knock at the door and here’s Agnes, “your neighbor to the right”.
